Here’s what to know
- With lawmakers gone for the holiday weekend, the Department of Homeland Security is almost certain to shut down at midnight Saturday after Democrats in the Senate rejected a bill yesterday that would fund DHS without new restrictions on federal immigration officers.
- Democrats are demanding reforms to curb tactics used by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and border protection agencies overseen by DHS to find and deport undocumented immigrants.
- The restrictions are a response to President Donald Trump’s surge of immigration officers into Minnesota. Federal agents killed two people during the crackdown, prompting major protests. Border czar Tom Homan announced an end to the crackdown yesterday.
