The Supreme Court on Monday released its decision on Donald Trump’s presidential immunity claim in his federal election interference case.
In an opinion authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, the court stated that former presidents have “absolute immunity” from criminal prosecution for official acts in their role. Former presidents do not have immunity for unofficial acts, the court wrote.
The decision all but guarantees a trial in special counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump won’t happen before the election in November.
