Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In Alabama’s gubernatorial race, Ken McFeeters challenged the eligibility of his primary rival, Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, emphasizing allegations that Tuberville, who owned a home in neighboring Florida, does not meet the legal requirement of having lived in Alabama for seven years. This week, however, the Alabama Republican Party dismissed the challenge.
* Although the Democrats’ redistricting initiative in Maryland still faces some difficult hurdles, the state House advanced the plan on Monday, bringing it a step closer to Gov. Wes Moore’s end goal.
* In related news, former state Rep. Dan Cox has joined the GOP’s gubernatorial field in Maryland, following a failed gubernatorial candidacy in 2022 and a failed congressional campaign in 2024.
* In Minnesota, where Democratic Sen. Tina Smith is retiring, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan just received a big boost: Smith endorsed Flanagan over her Democratic primary rivals.
* Speaking of the North Star State, a week after Sen. Amy Klobuchar launched her gubernatorial campaign, a new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll found the Democratic senator with large leads over every Republican contender.
* In New York’s gubernatorial race, incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul was at one point thought to be vulnerable, but a new Siena University poll found her with a 26-point lead over Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the likely Republican nominee. The same statewide survey found the governor’s favorability rating at an all-time high.
* In Texas’ closely watched Democratic U.S. Senate primary, a Texas Public Opinion Research poll found the top two candidates, Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico, effectively tied. The primary election is on March 3.
* And at a White House event late last week, Donald Trump falsely accused Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger of having “cheated” in her 2025 campaign. The president, naturally, offered no evidence to support his ridiculous conspiracy theory about the race, which the former Democratic congresswoman won by more than 15 points.
